It doesn't have to be complicated....
All websites use a simple pyramid structure starting from the home page on the top teir. Next the main sub-pages, such as about us, products, services, faq, and contact. Obviously we are simplifying, but that is just our point you do not need to over complicate your website.
1. Map it out
Get a pen and paper and quickly sketch your website structure. Even better brainstorm with your colleagues and see what happens. Before very long you will have the basic structure of your website and be ready to begin gathering the images and text.
2. Keep it simple
Think about it, how long do you spend on a website.... do you sit there reading every paragraph? Hopefully you will read every one on this page because it will give you an insight into how to structure and develop your website.
3. Gather your content
If you were supplying content for a catalogue would you keep sending it through bit by bit, jumping from page to page, supplying an image for the front page and then one for the inside back page? Your website is no different, by following a plan and keeping to it your website content will come together in no time at all.
- Prepare a separate text document for each page
- Reference your images within each text document, you'll know where everything goes
- Name your images with meaningful names as this not only helps you identify the images but also search engines
- Resize your images and optimise them to ensure that your website is fast loading
Sound easy and it is with our knowledge and advice you'll be mastering website design in no time at all.
4. Manage it
Someone has to take ownership of your website management. In a larger company there may be a team, each working on different areas of the website. The most important thing to consider is that who ever takes on your website management they must allow the time and also discipline themselves in keeping it up-to-date.
